Manual (mechanical) facial cleansing is one of the most effective ways to deeply cleanse the skin. During the procedure, a skincare professional removes impurities—such as blackheads and clogged pores—either by hand or using special tools. The procedure helps make the skin clearer and smoother and prevents inflammation.
Once a month, your skin needs a deeper cleanse, especially if you have oily or problem skin. Deep cleansing removes dead skin cells, eliminates blackheads and whiteheads, and helps flush out impurities and toxins while boosting metabolism and blood circulation.
Mechanical facial cleansing delivers visible results that can be seen immediately after the procedure. The procedure is quite simple to perform and affordable. Plus, it takes no more than an hour. Furthermore, mechanical facial cleansing is a transparent method, as you can see exactly how much and what has been removed during the process.
How is the procedure performed?
After steaming the skin, opening the pores, and softening sebaceous plugs, the aesthetician wipes the treatment area with lotion and begins cleansing the pores. Using a special sieve or spoon, they remove oil buildup, blackheads, and dead skin cells over the course of 5–7 minutes, avoiding areas with inflamed acne. Special lighting allows the aesthetician to see even the tiniest impurities. Special tools help the aesthetician grasp even sebum plugs deeply embedded in the pores and push them out. If the aesthetician cannot remove the sebum from the pores using the tools, then this process is performed manually, which is quite painful. To do this, the aesthetician wraps a clean cloth around their fingers and begins to push the impurities out with light squeezing motions.
It is very important to finish the cleansing before the pores close, which takes about twenty minutes; otherwise, the skin will cool down, and the pores will close as a result. Then the cleansing will become much more painful. Therefore, if there are multiple inflammations on the face, a multi-step cleansing is necessary until all pores are completely cleared.
If there are not many inflammatory lesions or acne on the skin, additional cleansing is not required. In more severe cases, in addition to mechanical facial cleansing, vacuum cleansing is performed using a vacuum device, which consists of a small glass tube with a low-pressure area created inside. Under the action of the vacuum, sebaceous plugs are sucked out of the pores, even in hard-to-reach areas. In general, vacuum cleansing almost always complements mechanical cleansing, as does darsonvalization (exposure of the skin to high-frequency alternating current pulses), which also stimulates natural metabolism, regenerates the skin, and improves blood circulation. After such a procedure, all inflammation and minor skin abrasions dry up immediately.
After cleansing, the skin requires soothing, disinfecting, and pore-tightening treatments. To achieve this, the skin is wiped with a lotion or toner that has a disinfecting effect. Additionally, an infrared lamp, darsonvalization, and soothing and anti-inflammatory masks are used. For example, masks based on therapeutic clay, which has the ability to absorb excess sebum, tighten pores, and reduce inflammation. Additionally, it is an excellent remedy for evening out skin tone. As an additional measure to soothe the skin and stimulate blood circulation, a massage (such as cryomassage) is performed. After the procedure, you should remain in the salon for half an hour to allow the pores to close completely.
The result of mechanical facial cleansing is healthy, breathable skin with barely visible pores, a more even complexion, and virtually no blackheads or pimples. A medium-depth peel produces the same effect. In the first few days after this procedure, your skin will experience some discomfort in the form of increased oil production and itching. Immediately after the procedure, red spots will be visible on the skin, and after a few days, the skin will begin to peel. Therefore, you should not undergo this procedure on the eve of any important event or occasion.
After mechanical cleansing, you must not wash your face with water for at least 12 hours. For one week after the procedure, it is recommended to use an alcohol-free lotion. Since the skin needs time to rest and heal, you should avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and swimming. Additionally, if scabs form over the treated pores, do not pick at them, as this may lead to scarring.

FAQ
Can you get a mechanical cleansing only after the age of 18?
No, in fact, there are no age restrictions for this procedure. The need to restore sebaceous gland function is determined by a single factor: the presence of comedones.
If I get a facial once, will I have to keep getting them?
This is a misconception. Having a facial done does not impose any obligations on you. Going forward, the choice is yours: live with comedones and acne, thereby contributing to the severe progression of the condition, or consistently cleanse your pores, aiming to make mechanical cleansing a preventive measure that promotes long-term remission.
How often should facial cleansing be performed?
It all depends on the condition of your skin. For heavily congested, oily skin, it is advisable to perform this procedure once a week. For normal skin—once a month. If there are no acute issues, it is advisable to repeat this cleansing once every 3–6 months.
Will there be any marks left on my face after a mechanical cleansing procedure?
Mechanical cleansing is a fairly invasive procedure, although an experienced specialist can cut the recovery time in half. A lot also depends on your skin type—for sensitive skin, mechanical cleansing does not go unnoticed. However, there is always a recovery period after mechanical cleansing, regardless of skin type—it may be longer for some and shorter for others. Immediately after the procedure, there may be redness and small wounds on the face. Allow 2–5 days for full recovery, and you’ll likely be safe.
How to care for your skin after mechanical cleansing?
Since mechanical cleansing traumatizes the skin, you should completely avoid sunbathing, swimming pools, and saunas after the procedure. Do not wash your face for 12 hours, and avoid using powder or foundation for 24 hours. Immediately after the treatment, you may notice increased oil production—this is normal, as the plugs that were blocking sebum from exiting the pores have been removed. Gently treat the pores with chlorhexidine or a mild, alcohol-free toner. After a few days, you may experience some mild peeling—this is part of the skin’s renewal process. At this stage, use moisturizing and nourishing products. However, you should avoid scrubs, brushes, and any products that can irritate the skin.
