    What is phonophoresis / ionophoresis?

    Phonophoresis and Iontophoresis

The most significant difference between iontophoresis and phonophoresis is their different operating principles. The former uses galvanic currents, while the latter uses ultrasound. However, the main goals of both procedures are very similar: to help medications penetrate deeper into the skin to ensure a more effective effect.

Both processes are classified as physiotherapy treatments and both can be used to deliver medications through the outer skin layers. Let’s take a closer look at what iontophoresis and phonophoresis are.

Phonophoresis, or sonophoresis, involves the use of ultrasound in combination with medications, which are typically in gel form. The medication is applied to the skin, and then ultrasound waves are used to help the medication penetrate the skin in the targeted area.

Key differences between the two procedures:

    • Iontophoresis is more commonly used for direct and rapid drug delivery. Phonophoresis, having a weaker physical effect, is better suited for prolonged absorption.
    • Iontophoresis treatment typically lasts about 15–20 minutes, while phonophoresis requires no more than 10 minutes.
    • Iontophoresis is performed using an electrode, while phonophoresis is performed using special probes that emit ultrasonic energy.
    • Iontophoresis carries a risk of chemical burns, whereas phonophoresis is a relatively safe procedure.
    • Iontophoresis can cause pain during treatment, while phonophoresis is always less painful.
    • Iontophoresis requires a more highly trained specialist, whereas only two hours of training are needed to perform phonophoresis.
