It utilizes the body’s own fluids as the medium of application. Essentially, pressotherapy is a type of mechanical massage; it is offered by both massage and beauty salons as well as multidisciplinary medical clinics.

The patient is fitted with a special suit consisting of separate sections for each arm, leg, and the abdomen; air is sequentially pumped into these sections—from the feet to the abdomen—at a pressure exceeding normal atmospheric pressure. The air supply alternates in waves with pauses. The physiological significance of the procedure is as follows: the pressure creates a pulse wave in each sector, which literally drives excess fluid out of the intercellular space and enhances blood and lymphatic drainage.

By accelerating metabolic processes, the procedure not only helps restore normal blood and lymph circulation but also removes waste products from the body, reduces swelling, alleviates tired legs, strengthens blood vessels, improving skin tone, smoothing the subcutaneous fat layer (i.e., as part of a specialized course, it helps address lipodystrophy, or “cellulite”), and promoting weight loss.

In addition, pressotherapy is successfully used to treat certain diseases of the venous system and constipation, as well as in the treatment of post-traumatic and post-surgical swelling and hematomas; it is also prescribed (due to its antispasmodic and vasodilatory effects) to relieve general fatigue, muscle pain, and spasms, boost immunity, and promote relaxation. The procedure is very pleasant in itself and is enjoyed by everyone who has tried it; It is especially recommended for pregnant women suffering from leg swelling (second and third trimesters), as well as for people engaged in sedentary work—whether sitting or standing—such as drivers, office workers, teachers, security personnel, hairdressers, etc.; equally, this procedure is recommended for people struggling with excess weight, swelling, “cellulite,” sagging skin and muscles, and chronic fatigue. The procedure has proven highly effective as a preventive measure against varicose veins and thrombosis (particularly for those with a family history of these conditions) and in many other cases.

In aesthetic medicine, pressotherapy combines perfectly with other methods for treating obesity, “cellulite,” and body contouring, such as compression lipolytic or lifting bandaging (or “wraps”). In this case, after body peeling and a shower, bandaging is performed; the body is wrapped in treatment film, covered with a thermal blanket—and the bandaging session takes place. This is followed by a pressotherapy session. If desired, or if time is limited, the techniques can be combined: after wrapping the body in film, perform pressotherapy directly over the active formula beneath the film. In both cases, the effectiveness of the treatment is significantly enhanced, and the results are not only faster but also more pronounced.

Can people of retirement age undergo the procedure?

Yes, they can. In fact, it is recommended for them in many cases, such as for high blood pressure, after strokes, and for spinal conditions.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, they can, but special children’s equipment is required, so please check with the salon administrator before booking. Pressotherapy is beneficial for children, especially for scoliosis and spinal problems.

Is it safe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding?

It is not recommended.

Does it help with cellulite?

Yes, cellulite is the primary indication for this procedure.

Can it be done with varicose veins?

Yes, pressotherapy is indicated for varicose veins; however, the air compression pressure must be adjusted with particular care.

How often can it be done?

Specialists recommend taking breaks of two to three days between procedures.

Can it be performed if I have fibroids?

When aiming to reshape the body while having this condition, it is best to opt for pressotherapy, as it is non-invasive and poses no health risks; however, before making a final decision, it is best to consult with your gynecologist.

How many sessions are needed to achieve the full effect?

Depending on the patient’s goals and the size of the problem area (in the case of weight loss), between fifteen and twenty sessions.

Pressotherapy or myostimulation—which is better?

Myostimulation is a procedure based on pulsed currents that restore the function of damaged organs, muscles, and nerve endings. It is similar to pressotherapy in many ways: they have the same indications and contraindications; however, unlike myostimulation, during a pressotherapy session, the patient relaxes and experiences pleasant sensations.

Is it safe to undergo the procedure during menstruation?

It is best to refrain from pressotherapy procedures during the menstrual cycle.

Pressotherapy, also known as pneumatic drainage, pulsed barotherapy, and barocompression, is a fairly popular and well-known physical therapy procedure developed and first applied by the Dutch scientist Van Der Molen.
